About us

Engineering a better future, together
The University of Manchester is recognised globally for its pioneering research and the interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-sector partnerships helping to develop innovative solutions to the biggest challenges facing our world.

Championing research and innovation
As part of the University’s £1 billion, ten-year campus masterplan, the Manchester Engineering Campus development was one of the single largest construction projects undertaken by a higher education institution in the UK. This new home of Engineering and Materials is designed to unite people working across difference specialisms and give them a space to discover and develop real-world solutions.

For businesses seeking collaboration our diverse group of engineering staff are working across a wide range of disciplines from robotics, to artificial intelligence, healthcare and low carbon technology. We provide a creative, ambitious and supportive research environment, in which researchers at every career stage can develop and thrive as leaders in their chosen field.

Highlighting excellence
• In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, 93% of our research was assessed as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
• We are number one in the UK and Europe and number two in the world for delivering against the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, 2023), which include contributions to industry, innovation and infrastructure.
• We achieved the highest possible score in the latest Knowledge Exchange Framework for our work with intellectual property and commercialisation, research partnerships and community engagement.

Made in Manchester
Manchester has always been at the forefront of innovation, from its days at the heart of the Industrial Revolution, to the home of the first stored program computer, ‘The Baby’, and the site where graphene was first isolated. The government acknowledged the University’s contribution by naming a new £1 million AI prize after ‘The Baby’ to encourage further research in the field.

Partnering for success
The collaborative nature of our research and partnerships is enhanced by the University’s key Institutes and Centres. These include the Dalton Nuclear Institute, the largest academic provider of nuclear research, and the Henry Royce Institute, the UK’s national centre for advanced materials – just two examples of how we connect world-leading academics and pioneering industry partners.

We are The University of Manchester, and we’re ready to partner, collaborate and innovate.
